Rudolph Valentino’s "The Eagle 1925"

This Valentine’s Day matinee from 1925
features the silent screen’s all-time sex symbol, Rudolph Valentino, in one of his finest films. A highly enjoyable camp-fest, this silent flick is full of romance, revenge, and intrigue. Valentino stars as Vladimir Dubrovsky, a young Russian Cossack officer who rejects the Czarinas’ amorous attention and is promptly branded as a deserter in this silent tale of love and revenge. He escapes to the Russian countryside and becomes the “Black Eagle”, a masked vigilante who seeks to avenge his father’s death. This romantic adventure was Valentino’s 2nd to last film.
Original, live accompaniment will be provided on the spectacular Brevard College Kirkpatrick-Coleman Pipe Organ, the Porter Center's visual centerpiece. A glorious $1.2-million Kirkpatrick-Coleman Pipe Organ, and world-class instrument designed by master organ-builder Daniel Jaeckel, featuring three manual divisions, 69 ranks and 3,539 pipes.
Our accompanist, Dr. Vance Reese, is a church and temple organist, an opera coach, and a singer. When he's not doing all the above, he plays the organ for silent movies. This movie will make this his sixth silent movie that he has accompanied for the Porter Center, Reese also created the music score for last year's Valentino flick, "The Son of the Shiek." Vance plays organ at Christ School, Arden, and Congregation Beth Ha Tephila, Asheville. He also accompanies productions for the Asheville Lyric Opera and the Asheville Choral Society, plays double bass for the Asheville Symphony Orchestra, and teaches music theory at Mars Hill College. He lives in West Asheville in the Westwood Cohousing Community with Jean, his wife, and Jonathan, his son.
Brevardians may remember Vance from his days as the choirmaster/organist at St. Philip's Episcopal Church, as bassist and conductor of the Brevard Chamber Orchestra, and as adjunct professor of music at Brevard College.

The film will be introduced by a local silent movie buff, Chip Kaufmann, a native of Greenville, SC, who has lived in Asheville since 1983. Most of that time has been spent as a classical music announcer at public radio station WCQS. He was one of the judges at the initial Asheville Film Festival in 2003 and is currently a film critic for Rapid River Arts Magazine as well as President of the Hendersonville Film Society. Kaufmann has been interested in silent movies since the age of 10 and has over 250 silent film DVDs in his personal collection. He has also introduced four films for the Porter Center at Brevard College's silent film/organ series: The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Son of the Sheik, The Black Pirate, and Dr Jekyll & Mr. Hyde. After the film he will provide an informative Q&A session!
