Rudolph Valentino’s “Son of the Sheik”

This Valentine’s Day matinee from 1926 features the silent screen’s all-time sex symbol, Rudolph Valentino, in his finest (and final) film.  A highly enjoyable camp-fest, this 62-minute flick illustrates how sex symbols have changed over the decades.  Original, live accompaniment on the Brevard College Kirkpatrick-Coleman Pipe Organ.

The Romantic Singing Duo of “Too Human”

Admission: $20 for adults. $15 for students and TC Arts members.

Whether performing breezy, jazzy, toe tapping swing, a bluesy, heartfelt ballad, or a familiar standard from the American Songbook, Ellen Schwartz and Roger Bruno of Too Human will move you with their music.

With guitars, percussion and vocals, they have a jazzy / bluesy feel with a lot of heart. Their songs touch on many topics all related to the human condition. Ellen's earthy voice combines perfectly with Roger's unusual percussion style and sweet vocals. High quality musicianship with humor and passion, totally in sync with each other, they create a strong and intimate atmosphere. They bring a spirit and spontaneity to their performance, sometimes even writing songs on the spot using audience members as their subject matter. Too Human, based in New York, has shared the stage with 10,000 Maniacs, Janis Ian, Martin Sexton, Livingston Taylor, Kenny Rankin, Kim and Reggie Harris, Susan Werner, Jack Williams, Les Sampou, David Amram, Dave's True Story, Dean Friedman, and Sloan Wainwright.

While living in California, Ellen and Roger were professional songwriters for Warner/Chappel Music, where they had songs covered by recording artists such as Cher, Pat Benatar, Teddy Pendergrass, Martha Davis, Angela Bofill, Anne Murray, and Nancy Wilson. Their debut CD, From There to Here , was critically acclaimed by Sing Out! Magazine and The Musician's Trade Journal and received national and international radio play. Their latest studio CD, True features Dave Mattacks on drums, Mike Rivard and Marty Ballou on upright bass; Marty Walsh on additional guitars, mandolin, and bass; and Deni Bonet on strings.

Peru Negro

Perú Negro was formed more than 35 years ago to preserve Peru’s African heritage and became the national standard emulated by other bands. This group of 22 singers, dancers, and musicians performs all over the world and were appointed as “Cultural Ambassadors of Black Peru” by the Peruvian government. Through their work, the members of this Afro-Peruvian music and dance company recreate the folkloric history of their ancestors, the people stolen from Africa and forced into slavery in the 1500s by the Spanish colonizers of Peru.

The group’s repertoire features such diaspora innovations as the presence of an African djembe and Cuban drums. While the group continues to reinterpret many traditional songs, it also composes new pieces. The diverse elements in Perú Negro’s repertoire reflect a complex history of blacks in Peru.

Founder Ronaldo Campos de La Colina directed the group until his death in 2001. His son Rony took the director’s chair and under his direction the group is “experiencing a revival” deepening its musical explorations. Many members of the Campos family perform with Perú Negro, making it very much a family-based tradition, as well as one with broader cultural roots. Today more than 30 people are involved and the Lima based music and dance ensemble runs its own school and junior troupe, Perú Negrito. In 2005 the group was honored with two Grammy nominations for their second US album, Jolgorio. The first nomination came through the Latin Grammys’ traditional music category and the second for the Grammy’s World Music category.
