Fourth of July Celebration
Catch the Hometown Spirit!
Downtown Brevard’s
July 4, 2007
Where else can you catch the hometown spirit, but in Downtown
Brevard for Independence Day!

Fourth of July Celebration
We started off with a bang early in the morning with the 5K Firecracker
Run, organized by the Brevard Rotary Club. And by the end of the
evening we were treated to a fireworks spectacular that
left us wanting to spend the rest of our holidays in the mountains.
For the past 9 years United Community Bank has provided the wonderful July
4th fireworks extravaganza. This year Smith Systems, Gallery on Main/Lindsey Wireless, AAAAA Portable Outhouse Toilets, and Jim Fortune joined United Community Bank to put on a spectacular fireworks display.
During the day, downtown streets were closed to an overflowing
crowd. This year, the Transylvania Community Arts Council hosted
its 35th Annual Fine Arts & Craft Showcase. Not only was this a great
way to showcase the artists of the region, but what better time
to come and shop for those special gifts?!
Our Classic Automobile Show stretches for blocks and delighted
even the casual aficionado of 1920s to 1970s vintage vehicles.
Organized by the Transylvania AACA, entertainers like Elvis
and the Blues Brothers have been known to show up and croon while
you swoon over these classic beauties.
The music didn't stop with the cars. Our Courthouse
Gazebo was center stage for day-long musical entertainment. Independence
Day wouldn’t have been right without our own Brevard Brass Band,
playing timeless American favorites. The 2007 program also welcomed Blue Kudzu, Brevard Community Band, Ethos, Park Rangers, and Pyramid Brass Band.

Downtown Brevard had its only special July 4th Parade. This
one is just for children, and they can decorate and ride their
favorites bicycles. Children can compete for the Most Patriotic, Most Creative, and the Most Unusual. The 1st and 2nd place winners of the three categories were awarded ribbons, while the first place winner in each category won a gift certifcate to Sycamore Cycles. The winners of the 2007 Bicycle Parade are:
Most Unusual: 1st Place Natasha Popkin (The Star Spangled Clown)
2nd Place Paul Adair (The Bike with its Guns Blazing)
Most Creative: 1st Place Olivia Moumne (The "Let Freedom" Ring)
2nd Place Jordan Moumne (The All-American Cowgirl)
Most Patriotic: 1st Place Ellie Adair (The Flags of the United States)
2nd Place Capt. Liberty a.k.a. Tristan (The Caped Big Wheeler)
Other activities for children included Par-T-Perfect’s
Kid Zone of Inflatables, Pisgah Climbing Wall, Little Blue Choo, and Eurobungee.
And an important tradition is the reading of the “Declaration
of Independence”. During the day’s festivities we
took time to reflect on the incredible document created in 1776
that has made so much possible in our wonderful nation.
