Downtown Brevard has its own special July 4th Parade. This one is just for children, and they can decorate and ride their favorite bicycles. Children can compete for the Most Patriotic, Most Creative, and the Most Unusual. The 1st and 2nd place winners of the three categories are awarded ribbons, while the first place winner in each category wins a gift certifcate to Sycamore Cycles. If riding in the Bicycle Parade you must wear a helmet. Other activities for children include Par-T-Perfect’s Kid Zone of Inflatables, Pisgah Climbing Wall, Little Blue Choo, and Eurobungee. And an important tradition is the reading of the “Declaration of Independence." The Brevard Community Band, under the direction of Jamie Hafner, is a summer band composed of 75+ volunteer musicians from Brevard and surrounding areas. The band's membership ranges in ages from 16-80+ and is made up of both amateur and professional musicians. The purpose of the band is to promote band music and provide an outlet for instrumentalists to express their musical talents. The band is also a philanthropic organization by providing music scholarships to local students and grants to schools to promote music education.
This is not the ordinary community band. The Brevard Community Band plays very high level and challenging band literature. The band has a large percentage of professional musicians including 16 band directors, 4 music professors and a world famous composer. Maestro Hafner is highly renowned for his conducting and is one of the best tuba players in the country.
Sylvan Squares Dancing
Exit 4Exit 4 is one of the newest jazz-fusion and R&B groups in Western North Carolina.
The band was formed in the Fall of 2007 by Vibraphonist Jason DeCristofaro and Guitarist Nelson Dougherty, who wanted to form a jazz group with a unique sound. With the addition of Drummer Jerard Sloan and Bassist Cameron Austin, Exit 4 was able to tackle a variety of genres, including Bebop, Fusion, Funk, R&B, Ballads, and Traditional Jazz.
The band's sound could be described as sophisticated music, the language of jazz, infused with an infectious groove and modern sound. Exit 4 members include: Jason DeCristofaro on the Vibraphone, Nelson Dougherty on the Guitar, Jerard Sloan on the Drums, and, for today's performance, filling in on Bass for Cameron Austin, Mike Di Perna. Ethos
This emerging band of Brevard locals has been evolving over the last two years. Their sound is shaped in reggae infused rock and roll with a smattering of pop. The melodies are catchy and the rhythm inspires the feet to move. Ethos has been together for a little over two years now and in that time they have been able to put together their own sound. They have made some changes, but the core has stayed the same and have been able to build their repertoire. Ethos is dedicated to sharing their music and will be gigging and recording much more in the near future. They sing the truths that they live and to grooves that move them. Pyramid BrassBlended Spirits
Blended Spirits started in the Fall of 2005. Judy and good friend, Beth Ihme had been doing duets that summer and having a great time. Judy wanted to start a band that would do a variety of music. The band had its growing pains and some changes were made as things progressed. However, things were going well and continuing to progress as the band gained popularity and support.
